Frequently Asked Questions About Watches

Why Is A Fine Timepiece Better Than A Plain Old Watch?

Most of have had, or currently have, a watch bought for less than $50 and it works just fine. Why should you spend $75 to $250 to $1000 on a watch?

Your watch is probably the one item you wear that you look at the most each day. Why not have something that pleases you to look at, that reminds you of your good taste and that sends you a reminder of how much you value your time. And when others see your watch and get the same idea about you from it, so much the better.

What’s The Best Type of Watch Movement?

There are four main types of watch movements:

  • Quartz movement watches actually have a piece of quartz in them that, when energized by power from a battery, vibrates at a constant 32,768 times per second. Quartz movement watches keep time within plus or minus a second a month. Plus they never need winding.
  • New on the scene are solar movement watches. Instead of using a battery, these watches use light to power a capacitor that runs the quartz movement. Since no battery is needed, the watch needs very little maintenance.
  • Instead of a battery, mechanical movement watches are powered by a coiled steel ribbon wound by turning the crown on the side of the watch. As the coil unwinds it sets parts into motion which move the watches hands. The watch must be wound at least every few days or it will stop.
  • Automatic watches are mechanical watches that wind when the wrist moves. If they are not worn for a period of time, they will also stop.

Most people prefer quartz movement watches for their ease of use and superior accuracy. People who appreciate the fine art of old-time watchmaking may prefer mechanical movement watches.
